ATT Debt collection even after paying it in full

Hi, I transferred my account from under my name to one of my friends and I was assisted by an att representative to pay off the exact amount that I owe for my handset and data plan. I paid off the entire amount that was told by your representative and was under the impression that I'm done with my old account. Later I got a letter from you saying that I have an outstanding payment, so I contacted you again to check if I owe anything. I was told that I don't need to pay as I've already done all payments. After a month I was contacted by the debt collector asking me to pay the balance. This has caused my so much trouble and no one was able to assist me properly as to why this is happening. I've had troubles with att earlier but this is the worst I've ever encountered. I don't mind paying the amount (which I actually did to get this issue off my back) but I need to know why I was asked to pay time and again and why is your system not updating my transfers and payments that I've made. I had to suffer because of the flaw in your system, I never had any issues on my credit and now I'm pretty sure it is messed up. I need an answer and want my issue resolved. Please help me out here.
