It lists payment as $30 a month. When i click on it, only a cash purchase option is allowable. I have an active account now I'd like to add this to.

Only the account owner can get the code. Ask your friend for the code. However, if they are now using another phone, that SIM card is probably no longer active. The code likely won't do you any good....
